Baie Lazare Beach, Mahe, Seychelles, Africa
Baie Lazare Beach is a public beach located on the southwestern coast of Mahé Island, Seychelles.
It is characterized by its fine, white sand and clear, shallow turquoise waters.
Visual Characteristics
The beach features a crescent-shaped shoreline approximately 1.5 kilometers in length. The sand is composed of fine, white coral fragments. The water depth increases gradually from the shore, remaining shallow for a considerable distance. Coconut palms and Takamaka trees line the landward side of the beach, providing natural shade.
Location & Access Logistics
Baie Lazare Beach is situated 25 kilometers south of Victoria, Mahé's capital city. Access is via the Anse Soleil Road, which branches off the main coastal road (Provincial Road 10). Ample parking is available along the roadside adjacent to the beach. Public transport is limited; bus route 11 stops approximately 500 meters from the beach entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is a natural formation, part of the granitic island geology of Mahé. The sand is derived from the erosion of the island's granite bedrock and the breakdown of coral reefs offshore. The area is classified as a coastal marine ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible in the calm waters. Snorkeling can be undertaken near the rocky outcrops at either end of the bay, particularly during calm sea conditions. Sunbathing on the sand is a primary activity. The beach is suitable for walking along its length.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are located near the main access point. Shade is provided by natural tree cover. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. Food vendors are not permanently stationed on the beach, but small restaurants and cafes are located on the adjacent Anse Soleil Road.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) and late afternoon (16:00-18:00) offer optimal lighting conditions. The driest months, from May to October, provide the most favorable weather for beach activities. High tide is generally preferred for swimming and snorkeling.
Facts & Legends
The bay is named after Lazare Picault, a French explorer who charted the Seychelles archipelago in the 18th century. Local folklore suggests that the bay was a favored resting spot for pirates during their voyages in the Indian Ocean.
