The Seychelles Tea Factory is a processing facility located on the island of Mahé in the Seychelles. It is situated in the Montagne Posse region.

Visual Characteristics

The factory building is constructed primarily from concrete with a corrugated metal roof. Its exterior is painted a pale green. The structure is two stories high with visible pipework and processing machinery through some of the windows. Surrounding the factory are terraced tea plantations.

Location & Access Logistics

The factory is located approximately 10 kilometers south of Victoria, the capital city of Mahé. Access is via the Sans Soucis Road (also known as the Montagne Posse Road). The road is paved and suitable for most vehicles. Parking is available on-site in a gravel lot adjacent to the main building. Public bus route 14 stops approximately 500 meters from the factory entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Seychelles Tea Factory was established in 1962. It was originally built to process tea grown on the island, utilizing the fertile volcanic soil and favorable climate of the Montagne Posse region. The tea plantations themselves are an example of agricultural adaptation to the island's terrain.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the tea processing stages, from drying to packaging. Guided tours are available, detailing the history and methods of tea production. Samples of locally produced tea are offered. The surrounding tea fields are accessible for short walks.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available for visitors. Limited shaded areas are present near the entrance. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. There are no on-site food vendors, but small shops selling tea and snacks are located near the factory.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is mid-morning, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, when sunlight illuminates the tea fields. The dry season, from May to September, offers the most pleasant weather for visiting. Processing operations run year-round.

Facts & Legends

A specific detail of the processing is the use of a traditional CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) method for black tea production, alongside orthodox methods for specialty teas. Local lore suggests the aroma of the drying tea leaves can influence dreams.
