Brief Garden is a botanical garden located in Bentota, Sri Lanka. It was established by Bevis Bawa.

Visual Characteristics

The garden features a diverse collection of tropical plants, including palms, ferns, and flowering trees. Sculptures by Bevis Bawa are integrated throughout the landscape. Water features, such as ponds and streams, are present. The overall design emphasizes naturalistic planting with winding paths.

Location & Access Logistics

Brief Garden is situated approximately 2 kilometers inland from the A2 coastal road in Bentota. Access is via the B157 road (Galle Road). Parking is available on-site. The nearest major town is Bentota, from which local taxis or tuk-tuks can be hired. Public bus services operate along the A2 road, with a stop near the turn-off for the garden.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Brief Garden was conceived and developed by Bevis Bawa, a renowned Sri Lankan artist and landscape designer, starting in the 1950s. It was originally part of his larger estate and served as a private sanctuary and artistic expression. The garden is situated on land that was formerly agricultural.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the garden paths to observe the plant collection and sculptures. Photography of the landscape and art is permitted. The garden is designed for leisurely exploration.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shaded areas are provided by the plant canopy and some structures. Cell phone signal is generally available. Food vendors are not typically present within the garden itself, but are available in the nearby town of Bentota.

Best Time to Visit

The garden is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The morning hours, between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM, offer softer light for photography. The months of December to April generally have lower rainfall, though the garden is accessible year-round. High tide or low tide is not a relevant factor for visiting this inland garden.

Facts & Legends

Bevis Bawa was the brother of the more famous architect Geoffrey Bawa. Brief Garden was one of several artistic projects he undertook on his estate, including the creation of a swimming pool with a sculpted figure. A specific "secret" tip is to look for the various animal sculptures hidden within the foliage.
