Cala Pregonda, Es Mercadal, Balearic Islands, Europe
Cala Pregonda is a beach located on the northern coast of Menorca, within the municipality of Es Mercadal, Balearic Islands.
This coastal feature is characterized by its reddish-orange sand, a result of iron oxide deposits, and its shallow, clear waters. The beach is bordered by low, eroded sandstone cliffs and small islets offshore. Vegetation is sparse, consisting primarily of low-lying Mediterranean scrub.
Location & Access Logistics
Cala Pregonda is situated approximately 7 kilometers northwest of Es Mercadal. Access is primarily via a 2-kilometer unpaved track originating from the main road PMV-7110 (Ferreries to Fornells). Parking is available at the start of this track, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. During peak season, a shuttle bus service may operate from Es Mercadal. Alternatively, access is possible via a coastal path from Platja de Cavalleria, a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The reddish coloration of the sand is a result of the erosion of the local sandstone formations, which contain significant iron oxide content. The offshore islets are remnants of the same geological strata. Ecologically, Cala Pregonda is part of a protected coastal area, supporting a specific assemblage of Mediterranean flora and fauna adapted to arid conditions.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and sunbathing are primary activities. Snorkeling is feasible in the clear waters, particularly around the offshore islets. Exploration of the rock formations along the coastline is possible. The adjacent coastal paths offer opportunities for walking.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No permanent infrastructure or amenities are present directly at Cala Pregonda. Visitors should bring their own provisions. There are no restrooms or designated food vendors. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally intermittent to absent.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the sand's color. The months of May, June, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. High tide is not a significant factor for access or activity.
Facts & Legends
The distinctive color of Cala Pregonda has led to local folklore suggesting it was formed from the blood of ancient giants. Geologically, the iron oxide content is the verifiable cause.
