The Canton Tower is situated on the south bank of the Pearl River, approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) south of Guangzhou's city center. Paid parking is available at the base of the tower, though it can fill quickly during peak hours.

Construction of the Canton Tower began in 2005 and was completed in 2010. It was designed by the architectural consortium of Arup and ARUP. The tower's original purpose was to serve as a broadcast tower for the 2010 Asian Games and to become a new landmark for Guangzhou.
