The Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse is a navigational aid situated at the southernmost point of Formentera Island in the Balearic Islands.
It is a cylindrical tower constructed from white-painted concrete, standing approximately 18 meters (59 feet) tall. The lighthouse features a red lantern room and is positioned on a flat, rocky plateau.
Location & Access Logistics
The lighthouse is located 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of Sant Francesc Xavier. Access is via the PM-820 road, turning onto the Cap de Barbaria road. The final 2 kilometers are unpaved but generally passable for standard vehicles. Parking is available at the end of the road, with capacity for approximately 30 vehicles. No public transport directly serves the lighthouse; a 15-minute walk is required from the parking area.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lighthouse was constructed in 1974. It serves a modern navigational purpose, marking the southern extremity of the island and the approach to the Pitiusas Islands. The plateau on which it stands is composed of Miocene limestone, characteristic of the geological formations in the region.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk to the lighthouse and explore the surrounding rocky terrain. A notable feature is the cave located approximately 500 meters west of the lighthouse, accessible via a narrow path. The cave contains a small, circular opening in its ceiling, known as "Cova de la Lletra" or "Cave of the Letter," through which sunlight penetrates.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities at the lighthouse itself. Restrooms and food vendors are not present. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the vicinity. Shade is minimal, provided only by the lighthouse structure itself.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the late afternoon offers direct sunlight on the lighthouse and the sea. The months of May, June, September, and October provide the most pleasant weather conditions, with average temperatures between 20-25°C (68-77°F). There are no tide-dependent access restrictions.
Facts & Legends
The "Cave of the Letter" is rumored to have been used by smugglers in the past. The circular opening in the cave ceiling is a natural geological feature, but its precise formation is debated.
