Central Market (Phsar Thmei), Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Asia
Central Market, known locally as Phsar Thmei, is a large Art Deco market located in the Daun Penh district of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Visual Characteristics
The market is housed within a distinctive yellow, domed structure. Its central dome is supported by four large archways, with smaller domes and wings extending outwards. The building is constructed primarily of concrete and steel, with large windows providing natural light. The exterior features decorative elements characteristic of Art Deco architecture.
Location & Access Logistics
Phsar Thmei is situated at the intersection of Kampuchea Krom Boulevard and Street 63. It is approximately 1.5 kilometers east of the city center. Ample parking is available in the surrounding streets, though it can be congested. Several local bus routes pass by or near the market, including routes 1, 3, and 4.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The market was constructed by the French colonial government and opened in 1937. It was designed by the French architect Jean Desbriereux and built by the Cambodian company Société d'Entreprise Khmère. Its original purpose was to consolidate various smaller markets and provide a central, modern trading hub for the city.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can browse a wide array of goods, including fresh produce, seafood, meats, spices, textiles, jewelry, souvenirs, and electronics. Bargaining is a common practice. The market is divided into four main sections: the central dome for jewelry and precious stones, and the four wings for clothing, food, and general merchandise.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the market complex. Shade is provided by the building's structure and awnings. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within and around the market. Numerous small food stalls and vendors operate inside and immediately outside the market, offering local snacks and drinks.
Best Time to Visit
The market is open daily from approximately 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The early morning hours, between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM, offer the best lighting for photography of the building's exterior and interior architecture, with fewer crowds. The afternoon can be very warm and humid.
Facts & Legends
During the Khmer Rouge regime, the market was largely abandoned and fell into disrepair. It was later renovated and reopened. A local anecdote suggests that the market's distinctive yellow color was chosen to ward off evil spirits.
