City Lake Park is situated approximately 3 miles south of High Point's central business district. Access is via Eastchester Drive (NC-62) and then turning onto Park Drive. Public transportation is served by the High Point Transit System, with the Route 3 bus stopping at the park entrance on Eastchester Drive.

The lake was formed in 1927 with the construction of a dam across a small tributary of the Deep River. The original purpose was to provide a water source for local industries. The area is classified as a temperate deciduous forest ecosystem.
