Cocoa Island by COMO, North Male Atoll, Maldives, Asia
Cocoa Island by COMO is a private island resort located in the North Malé Atoll of the Maldives.
It is characterized by its elongated, canoe-shaped overwater villas constructed from local materials.
Visual Characteristics
The island features overwater villas built from treated coconut timbers and thatch roofing. The villas are elevated above shallow turquoise waters. The surrounding lagoon exhibits clear water with a sandy bottom. Vegetation on the island is limited to palm trees and low-lying tropical plants.
Location & Access Logistics
Cocoa Island is situated approximately 35 kilometers south of Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. Access is exclusively via a 40-minute speedboat transfer arranged by the resort. There is no public road access or parking available on the island itself.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The island's development as a resort began in the early 2000s, with a focus on sustainable construction and integration with the natural environment. Ecologically, it is part of the Maldivian archipelago, formed by coral reefs built upon submerged volcanic mountains.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include snorkeling in the house reef, diving excursions, yoga sessions, and spa treatments at the COMO Shambhala Retreat. Guests can also engage in non-motorized water sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding. Fishing trips are available upon request.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The island provides private villa accommodations, a central restaurant and bar, a spa facility, and a small boutique. Restrooms are available within each villa and in common areas. Shade is provided by the villa structures and natural vegetation. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available, though can be intermittent. There are no external food vendors on the island; dining is exclusively at the resort's facilities.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from December to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with minimal rainfall and calm seas. For underwater visibility, the period between January and April is optimal. Sunrise and sunset provide specific lighting conditions for photography.
Facts & Legends
The resort's design was inspired by the traditional Maldivian dhoni (boat). A unique aspect of the island's marine life is the frequent presence of manta rays and whale sharks in the surrounding waters during specific seasons, particularly from May to November.
