Access is directly from Gloucester Avenue. Paid parking is available in a lot adjacent to the beach entrance. Public transportation, including route taxis, frequently travels along Gloucester Avenue, stopping near the beach entrance.

The beach was acquired by the government of Jamaica in 1972. Historically, it was a private beach owned by a Scottish doctor who used it for therapeutic purposes, hence the name. Ecologically, it is part of the Montego Bay Marine Park, a protected area established to conserve coral reefs and marine life.
