Dragon Fountain, Klagenfurt, Austria, Europe

The Dragon Fountain (Lindwurmbrunnen) is the heraldic landmark of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, located in the center of the Neuer Platz. It depicts a massive, winged dragon facing a statue of Hercules.

Visual Characteristics

The fountain features a 6-meter-long, 3-meter-high dragon sculpture carved from a single block of dark green chlorite schist (locally known as "Lindwurm stone"). The dragon is depicted with a coiled tail, a wide-open jaw serving as a water spout, and detailed scales. Opposite the dragon stands a stone statue of Hercules wielding a club. The entire ensemble is set within a large stone basin.

Location & Access Logistics

The fountain is situated in the exact center of the Neuer Platz, the city's main square. It is a 10-minute walk (approx. 1 km) north of the Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof (Main Station). As the square is a central pedestrian hub, vehicle access is restricted; the nearest parking is the Lindwurm-Garage located directly beneath the square. Public transit access is via the Klagenfurt Neuer Platz bus stop.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The dragon sculpture was commissioned by the city in 1582 and completed in 1593 by an unknown master (often attributed to Ulrich Vogelsang). The stone was quarried from the nearby Kreuzbergl hill. The Hercules figure and the water basin were added later, in 1633, to complete the fountain ensemble. The statue was moved several times within the square before reaching its current central position.

Key Highlights & Activities

The site is the primary gathering point for city tours and public events. During the winter, the fountain is the centerpiece of the Klagenfurt Christmas Market. It is a major site for photography due to its high-contrast dark stone against the surrounding pastel-colored Renaissance buildings. The base of the fountain serves as a common meeting point for locals.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The surrounding Neuer Platz is equipped with 5G cellular coverage and public Wi-Fi. Multiple benches line the square, and several cafes with outdoor seating provide views of the fountain. Public restrooms are available in the adjacent Rathaus (Town Hall). The square is entirely flat and barrier-free, allowing for full accessibility.

Best Time to Visit

The fountain is accessible 24 hours a day. For photography, the morning hours provide direct light on the dragon's head. In the evening, the statue is illuminated by spotlights, highlighting the texture of the chlorite schist. Summer is the most active season, while December offers a festive atmosphere with market stalls surrounding the monument.

Facts & Legends

The fountain is based on the Lindwurm Legend, which tells of a dragon that terrorized the marshy lands where Klagenfurt now stands. According to the tale, the dragon was defeated by a group of brave men who used a bull on a chain as bait. A verified historical curiosity: the dragon's head was modeled after the skull of a woolly rhinoceros found in a nearby gravel pit in the 14th century, which locals at the time believed to be a dragon's skull.
