First of May Square, Piran, Slovenia, Europe
First of May Square (Prvomajski trg), historically known as the Old Square (Piazza Vecchia), is a central plaza in Piran, Slovenia. It served as the town's administrative center until the late 13th century.
Visual Characteristics
The square is defined by a large elevated stone platform in the center, which covers a massive underground rainwater cistern. Two Baroque stone statues stand on the platform's edge: one representing Law and the other Justice. The square is enclosed by colorful residential buildings, many featuring traditional green shutters and small balconies.
Location & Access Logistics
The square is located in the heart of the Piran peninsula, approximately 300 meters west of Tartini Square.
Access: Accessible only by narrow medieval alleys (calli). The primary route is via Verdijeva ulica from the harbor or the inner residential streets.
Parking: Piran is car-free. Park at the Fornace garage and take the free shuttle to Tartini Square, then proceed on foot.
Navigation: The square serves as a junction for several major walking routes through the old town.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Following a severe drought in 1775, the town constructed a central reservoir beneath the square to collect rainwater from the surrounding rooftops. The stone platform acts as the roof of this cistern. Water was originally drawn from four wells located at the corners of the platform, which remain visible today.
Key Highlights & Activities
Social Hub: The square is a popular gathering spot, often hosting open-air concerts, theater performances, and community events in the summer.
Dining: Several local bars and seafood restaurants have outdoor seating directly on the square, providing a more intimate atmosphere than the larger Tartini Square.
Stone Statues: The statues of Law and Justice include pedestals that were historically used as measurement standards for local trade.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Connectivity: 4G and 5G cellular coverage is consistent.
Amenities: Public restrooms are not available on the square; facilities must be accessed in nearby establishments or at the main harbor.
Atmosphere: The square offers significant shade in the late afternoon due to the high density of surrounding buildings.
Best Time to Visit
Evenings are optimal for experiencing the local "vibe" as the square fills with residents and tourists dining outdoors. The architectural details are best photographed in the morning when the sun is high enough to reach into the narrow enclosure.
Facts & Legends
The square was the original heart of the town before the inner harbor was filled to create Tartini Square. A verified historical detail is the construction date of the cistern (1776–1777), which provided the town with a reliable water supply for over a century until modern plumbing was installed.
