The Fondation Beyeler is a museum of modern and contemporary art located in Riehen, a municipality bordering Basel. It houses the private collection of art dealers Hildy and Ernst Beyeler and is the most visited art museum in Switzerland.
Visual Characteristics & Architecture
Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano and opened in 1997, the building is a masterwork of High-Tech architecture integrated into a park.
Structure: The 127-meter-long building consists of four parallel 80-centimeter-thick walls of red Patagonian porphyry stone.
Roof System: A complex "floating" glass roof provides filtered natural light to the galleries while protecting sensitive artworks.
Landscape Integration: Large floor-to-ceiling windows at the ends of the galleries offer views of the surrounding Berower Park, including a water lily pond that visually merges with the museum’s interior.
Collection & Exhibits
The permanent collection contains approximately 400 works of Classic Modernism and contemporary art.
Key Artists: Significant holdings of works by Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko, and Francis Bacon.
Tribal Art: The collection uniquely integrates ethnographic sculptures from Africa, Alaska, and Oceania alongside Western masterpieces.
Temporary Exhibitions: The museum hosts major international loan exhibitions (e.g., dedicated shows for Gauguin, Hopper, or Goya).
