Rocky Point Recreation Area is a public park situated on the eastern shore of Belle Fourche Reservoir in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
Visual Characteristics
The area features a shoreline composed of gravel and sand. The reservoir water color varies from blue to green depending on depth and light conditions. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling prairie with sparse vegetation, primarily grasses and low-lying shrubs. Several small, rocky outcrops are visible along the water's edge.
Location & Access Logistics
Rocky Point Recreation Area is located approximately 10 miles southwest of Belle Fourche. Access is via State Highway 79 South, turning onto County Road 18 (also known as Reservoir Road). The road is paved to the entrance of the recreation area. Ample parking is available in designated lots, including overflow areas during peak season. No public transport services operate directly to the site.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Belle Fourche Reservoir was created by the construction of the Belle Fourche Dam, completed in 1911. The dam impounds water from the Belle Fourche River for irrigation purposes. The recreation area itself was developed to provide public access to the reservoir for recreational activities. The land is part of the Northern Great Plains, characterized by sedimentary rock formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include boating, fishing, and swimming in the reservoir. Designated areas are available for picnicking. Hiking is possible on unpaved trails that follow the shoreline. Camping is permitted in designated campgrounds.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available in the main day-use area and near the campgrounds. Picnic tables and grills are provided. Shade structures are present in some day-use areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available, though it can be intermittent in certain locations. No food vendors are permanently located within the recreation area; visitors should bring their own supplies.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for water-based activities is from late May through September, when water temperatures are suitable. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer softer light. The area experiences high winds, particularly in the spring and fall, which can affect boating conditions.
Facts & Legends
The Belle Fourche Reservoir is the second-largest man-made reservoir in South Dakota. A local anecdote suggests that during exceptionally dry periods, the exposed lakebed reveals remnants of old homesteads, though these are unverified.
