Gabis Arboretum is a 125-acre public botanical garden and nature preserve located in Valparaiso, Indiana, approximately 10 miles south of Gary.

Gabis Arboretum is situated at 800 N. Old State Road 49, Valparaiso, IN 46383. It is approximately a 20-minute drive (10 miles) from downtown Gary via US-30 East and then North on Old State Road 49. Parking is available in a designated lot at the main entrance. No public transportation directly serves the arboretum.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The land was formerly part of the County Line Orchard. In 1997, it was donated to Purdue University North Central (now Purdue University Northwest) to establish a botanical garden and research facility. The arboretum's ecological origin is primarily deciduous forest and agricultural land, now managed for conservation and education.

Visitors can walk the 3 miles of marked trails through various garden collections and natural areas. Birdwatching is a common activity. Educational programs and seasonal events are offered. Photography of flora and fauna is permitted.

For optimal viewing of flowering plants, visit from April through October. Spring (April-May) offers blooming trees and wildflowers. Autumn (September-October) provides fall foliage colors. Mid-morning or late afternoon offers softer lighting for photography.

A notable feature is the "Whispering Pines," a stand of mature white pines that create a distinct sound when wind passes through them. The arboretum also houses a collection of over 100 species of native Indiana trees.
