Gjipe Beach, Himare, Albania, Europe

Gjipe Beach (Plazhi i Gjipesë) is a secluded coastal destination located on the Ionian Sea, situated between the villages of Dhërmi and Vuno in the Himarë District. It is defined by its position at the terminal end of the Gjipe Canyon.

Visual Characteristics

The beach is composed of white pebbles and coarse sand, framed by vertical limestone cliffs reaching heights of 70 meters. The water is exceptionally clear with a deep turquoise color. The canyon walls feature caves and dense Mediterranean vegetation, including oleander and laurel.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is restricted by geography. No paved road leads directly to the shoreline.

By Land: Access via the SH8 highway. Vehicles must park at a designated lot near the Monastery of Saint Theodore. From there, a 1.5-kilometer unpaved, rocky trail descends to the beach, requiring a 20–30 minute hike.

By Sea: Small boats and kayaks depart regularly from Dhërmi and Jale Beach.

Parking: Paid parking is available at the trailhead. Standard cars can reach the lot, but the trail itself is strictly for 4x4 vehicles or pedestrians.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach was formed by the erosion of the Gjipe River, which carved the surrounding 4-kilometer canyon into Mesozoic limestone. Historically, its isolation made it a strategic naval lookout and a site for the 14th-century Monastery of Saint Theodore. It is part of a protected ecological zone with minimal permanent development.

Key Highlights & Activities

Canyoning: The Gjipe Canyon offers technical hiking and climbing routes.

Rock Climbing: The limestone walls contain several bolted sport climbing sectors.

Kayaking: Exploring the sea caves along the coastline toward Jale.

Camping: A seasonal eco-campground operates in the shaded olive groves behind the beach.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Infrastructure is minimal and seasonal (May–September). A few rustic beach bars and small kitchens provide basic meals and drinks. There is no grid electricity; establishments use solar power or generators. Public restrooms and showers are limited to the seasonal camping facilities. 4G cellular signal is available but can be intermittent near the canyon floor.

Best Time to Visit

June and September provide the best balance of stable weather and fewer crowds. July and August are peak months, and the beach can become crowded with day-trippers from Dhërmi. Photography is optimal in the morning when the sun illuminates the canyon interior, or at sunset for the limestone glow.

Facts & Legends

A verified geographical oddity is the presence of several freshwater springs that emerge at sea level, causing temperature variations in the water near the rocks. Local lore suggests the canyon was a hiding place for pirates during the Ottoman period, using the high walls to shield their masts from the open sea.
