Livadi Beach, Himare, Albania, Europe
Livadi Beach (Plazhi i Livadhit) is a wide bay located on the Ionian coast of southern Albania, situated approximately 3 kilometers north of the town of Himarë. It is positioned at the foot of the Himare-castle_himare" class="underline">Himarë Castle hill within the Vlorë County region.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is 1.2 kilometers long and is characterized by a mix of coarse white sand and small limestone pebbles. The water is highly transparent with a deep turquoise color that transitions to dark blue at depth. It is bordered by large olive groves to the east and steep, rocky cliffs on the northern and southern flanks. The seabed drops off relatively quickly, typical of the Ionian coastline.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via a paved secondary road that descends from the SH8 national highway. It is approximately a 10-minute drive from the Himarë town center. While there is no dedicated public bus line, the beach is accessible by taxi or a 45-minute hike along a coastal trail from Spile. Parking is available in several large gravel lots situated behind the beachfront bars and restaurants.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is part of a tectonic coastline shaped by the Ceraunian mountain range. It has historically served as a small landing site for fishing vessels from the old village of Himarë. The surrounding area is part of the Mediterranean evergreen forest and scrub biome, dominated by ancient olive trees (Olea europaea), some of which are several centuries old.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and sunbathing are the primary activities in the central zone. The northern end of the beach, known as "Apollonia," features rocky formations suitable for snorkeling. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available for exploring the nearby sea caves. A coastal hiking trail connects Livadi to Jale Beach to the north.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach is well-developed with seasonal beach clubs, taverns, and campsites. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent across most of the shoreline. Public restrooms and showers are provided by the private beach establishments. 4G and 5G cellular coverage is consistent throughout the bay. Shade is primarily man-made, as the beach itself is fully exposed to the sun.
Best Time to Visit
June and September offer the most favorable conditions with moderate temperatures and fewer crowds. For photography, the morning hours provide the best illumination of the water's clarity, while the late afternoon highlights the texture of the limestone cliffs. The beach is most tranquil before 11:00 AM.
Facts & Legends
A specific tip for visitors is to visit the northern extremity of the beach to find "Uji i Ftohtë" (Cold Water), where natural freshwater springs emerge from the seabed, creating distinct cold-water currents within the warm sea. Historically, the olive groves behind the beach were a primary source of wealth for the Himariot families residing in the castle above.
