Gorky Central Park, Kharkiv, Ukraine, Europe

Overview

Gorky Central Park, officially known as Maxim Gorky Central Park for Culture and Recreation, is the largest and one of the most popular urban parks in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Covering around 130 hectares, it serves as a major recreational, cultural, and entertainment hub for residents and visitors alike.

History

Founding and Early Development
The park’s origins trace back to the late 19th century when local teachers, students, and citizens began planting trees and landscaping along Sumska Street. In 1899, the park’s area was doubled to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. Throughout the early 20th century, the park expanded further.

Soviet Era and Naming
In 1932, the park reached its current size of approximately 130 hectares. Six years later, in 1938, it was officially named after Maxim Gorky, the celebrated Russian writer, a common practice for public places during the Soviet period to honor prominent cultural figures.

World War II Impact
The park suffered severe destruction during the war: many buildings were destroyed, trees cut down, and natural features damaged, including Kharkiv’s only cedar grove. After the war, a large-scale restoration effort helped restore the park to its former glory.

Postwar Popularity
By the 1950s and 60s, Gorky Park was attracting more than 1.2 million visitors per year, becoming a central leisure destination for Kharkiv’s population.

Modern Renovations
From 2011 to 2012, the park underwent a significant renovation and modernization project. New attractions, improved landscaping, and upgraded infrastructure transformed it into a contemporary recreational space, earning it the nickname “Kharkiv Disneyland.” It is now considered one of the leading urban parks in Eastern Europe.

Main Attractions and Features

Ferris Wheel
The park features Ukraine’s tallest Ferris wheel, standing at 55 meters. It offers visitors panoramic views of Kharkiv and the surrounding areas, making it a landmark attraction.

Cable Car
Operational since 1971, the cable car connects Gorky Park with the nearby natural reserve Sarzhyn Yar, providing scenic rides above the city’s landscape.

Children’s Railway
Opened in 1940, this 3.6 km long miniature railway was the first children’s railway in Ukraine and remains a beloved attraction. It combines fun with educational value for children learning railway operations.
