Construction began in 1791 under the direction of architect Manuel Tolsá, commissioned by Bishop Juan Ruiz de Cabanas y Crespo. Its original purpose was to house orphans, the elderly, and the infirm. It was completed in 1810.

The chapel's dome, known as the "Cupola of Orozco," contains the artist's most famous mural, "Man," depicting the human condition. A local legend suggests that the spirits of some of the former residents still linger within the hospice's walls, particularly in the older sections.
