Liberty Hall Historic Site is a preserved 18th-century Georgian mansion located in Frankfort, Kentucky.

It served as the executive residence for Kentucky governors for over a century.

Visual Characteristics

The main structure is a two-and-a-half-story Georgian-style brick house. The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. The facade features a central portico with four Doric columns supporting a pediment. Original sash windows with multi-pane glazing are present. The interior features plaster walls, hardwood floors, and original woodwork.

Liberty Hall is situated at 501 West Broadway Street in Frankfort, Kentucky. It is approximately 0.5km west of the downtown Frankfort business district. Access is via West Broadway Street, which connects to US Route 60. On-site parking is available for visitors. Public transport options are limited; the nearest bus stops are located on St. Clair Street, approximately 0.8km east of the site.

Construction of Liberty Hall began in 1796 and was completed in 1800. It was designed by John Brown, a U.S. Senator from Kentucky, and built by local craftsmen. The original purpose was to serve as a private residence and a symbol of political influence in the newly formed state capital.

Guided tours of the main house are offered daily, detailing the architecture and furnishings. The grounds include formal gardens, which can be explored independently. A verified historical oddity is that Liberty Hall was the first brick mansion built in Frankfort. It remained in the Brown family for generations before being acquired by the Kentucky Historical Society.
