Lighthouse Beach, Dahab, Egypt, Africa
Lighthouse Beach is a coastal area situated in Dahab, Egypt, on the Sinai Peninsula.
This location serves as a primary entry point for diving and snorkeling activities in the Red Sea.
Visual Characteristics
The beach consists of coarse sand and small pebbles. The water exhibits a clear turquoise hue, transitioning to deeper blues further offshore. The coastline is characterized by a shallow reef shelf extending approximately 50 meters from the shore, followed by a steep drop-off. Small, low-lying structures, primarily dive centers and cafes, line the immediate beachfront.
Location & Access Logistics
Lighthouse Beach is located in the central area of Dahab, approximately 1.5 kilometers south of the main bus station. Access is via the promenade that runs along the Dahab coastline. Parking is available on side streets off the main road, with limited capacity. Public transport within Dahab consists of local minibuses; however, direct access to the beach is best achieved by walking from the town center or taking a taxi to the promenade entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The area's ecological significance stems from its position within the Red Sea coral reef system, a biodiversity hotspot. Historically, Dahab has been a fishing village, with Lighthouse Beach evolving into a focal point for tourism and marine activities due to its accessible reef.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling and scuba diving are the primary activities, with direct access to the Lighthouse reef. The reef supports a variety of marine life, including corals and fish species. Entry into the water is facilitated by sandy patches and designated access points. Kayaking and paddleboarding are also possible in calmer conditions.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Several dive centers operate on the beach, offering equipment rental and guided tours. Numerous cafes and restaurants are situated along the promenade, providing seating and food services. Restrooms are available at these establishments. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally consistent. Shade is provided by umbrellas and the structures of the cafes.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal underwater visibility and calm sea conditions, the months of September through November are recommended. The best time of day for photography, particularly for capturing the water's color, is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight is most direct. High tide is not a critical factor for access, but low tide can expose more of the reef edge.
Facts & Legends
A notable feature of Lighthouse Beach is the presence of a submerged lighthouse structure, which gives the beach its name. While not a functioning lighthouse, it serves as a dive site marker and an artificial reef attracting marine life.
