Llac de Cubil, Encamp, Andorra, Europe
Llac de Cubil is a high-altitude glacial lake situated within the Cirque de Pessons, located in the parish of Encamp, Andorra. This natural water body is part of a larger system of lakes formed by glacial activity in the eastern Pyrenees.
Visual Characteristics
The lake features clear, cold water that often displays deep blue and green hues, reflecting the surrounding sky and granite formations. Its shores consist of coarse gravel and exposed granite bedrock. Surrounding vegetation is typical of alpine environments, including sparse grasses, low-lying shrubs, and occasional patches of pine trees at lower elevations. The lake is contained within a U-shaped valley, characteristic of glacial erosion, with steep, rocky slopes rising on multiple sides.
Location & Access Logistics
Llac de Cubil is accessible primarily by hiking. The most common starting point is from the Grau Roig ski resort area, which is reached via the CS-280 road. From the center of Encamp, Grau Roig is approximately 15 kilometers east. Parking is available at the Grau Roig base station. From Grau Roig, a marked hiking trail, part of the GR 7 route, leads to the lake. The hike typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours one-way, involving a moderate ascent. Public transport to Grau Roig is limited; during ski season, bus services connect Encamp to the ski resorts, but off-season access often requires a private vehicle or taxi to the trailhead.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Llac de Cubil is a proglacial lake, formed by the erosive action of glaciers during the last ice age. Its basin was carved out by glacial ice, and the lake now occupies a depression in the granite bedrock. It is part of the Cirque de Pessons, a significant glacial cirque, and contributes to the headwaters of the Valira d'Orient river system. The lake's ecosystem supports cold-water adapted flora and fauna, including various species of trout.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with trails offering access to the lake and further into the Cirque de Pessons. Fishing for trout is permitted with a valid license, obtainable from local authorities. Photography of the alpine landscape and lake reflections is popular, particularly during calm weather. Picnicking is possible along the lake's shores.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent restrooms or dedicated shade structures directly at Llac de Cubil. Basic facilities, including restrooms and a restaurant, are available at the Refugi del Llac de Pessons, located further into the cirque, or at the Grau Roig base station. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) can be intermittent or absent at the lake itself, though it is generally available at Grau Roig. No food vendors operate directly at the lake; visitors should carry their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Llac de Cubil is during the summer months, from late June to early October, when snow has melted and hiking trails are clear. July and August offer the warmest temperatures. For photography, early morning provides softer light and often calmer water surfaces for reflections. There are no tide requirements as it is an inland lake.
Facts & Legends
A practical tip for visitors is to carry sufficient water and layers of clothing, as weather conditions in the high mountains can change rapidly, even in summer. The lake is known for its population of brown trout, which are regularly stocked to support recreational fishing.
