Museo dell Automobile, Turin, Italy, Europe
The Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile (MAUTO) is among the world's oldest and most significant automotive museums. Located on the left bank of the River Po, it houses a collection of nearly 200 original vehicles from 80 different brands, documenting the evolution of the car from a basic transport means to an object of design and cultural significance.
Visual Characteristics
The original 1960 building by Amedeo Albertini was radically modernized in 2011 by architect Cino Zucchi. The new exterior features a dramatic glass and steel "skin" that wraps the structure. The interior exhibits, designed by scenographer François Confino, use immersive lighting, sound installations, and dynamic projections to create a theatrical narrative rather than a standard showroom.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Corso Unità d’Italia, 40, in southern Turin. It is easily accessible via Metro Line M1 (Lingotto station), followed by a 5-minute walk. From Porta Nuova station, the transit time is approximately 10 minutes. The museum includes an underground paid parking garage and is positioned along the primary riverside cycling path.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1932 by Cesare Goria Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia, the museum moved to its purpose-built site in 1960. The 2011 renovation led The Times to rank it among the 50 best museums in the world. The site is situated in an area historically dominated by industrial production, reflecting Turin's identity as the "Motor City" of Italy.
Key Highlights & Activities

Facts & Legends
The museum houses the very first FIAT model produced in 1899. A centerpiece of the collection is the "Itala" 35/45 HP that won the 1907 Peking-to-Paris race; the vehicle is preserved in its original state, still bearing traces of the mud and dust from its 16,000-kilometer journey across Eurasia.
