Public transport options are limited; however, the local bus route 3 stops within a 0.5-mile (0.8 km) walk of the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Nebraska Veterans’ Memorial Park was established in 1958. The central obelisk was dedicated in 1964. The park was designed to honor Nebraskans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The land itself is part of the Great Plains physiographic region, characterized by relatively flat terrain and prairie grasses historically, now largely developed or landscaped.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the paved paths around the memorial plaza and pond. Seating is available at designated points. Photography of the obelisk and surrounding landscape is possible. The pond allows for passive observation of waterfowl. The park is used for quiet reflection and community gatherings.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restroom facilities are located near the main parking lot. Several picnic tables are distributed throughout the park, offering shaded areas under mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable within the park boundaries. No on-site food vendors are present, but commercial establishments are located within a 1-mile (1.6 km) radius.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) offer softer lighting conditions. The best months for visiting are from April to October, when temperatures are moderate and vegetation is at its peak. The pond's appearance can vary with seasonal rainfall.

Facts & Legends

The granite for the obelisk was quarried in South Dakota. A specific detail often overlooked is the inscription of the names of all Nebraskans killed in action since World War I on the base of the obelisk, a comprehensive record of state casualties.
