Neum Beach, Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
Neum Beach refers to the collective coastal strip of Neum, the only municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina with access to the Adriatic Sea. The coastline is approximately 24 km long, though the primary beach areas are concentrated within the Neum bay, shielded by the Klek peninsula.
Visual Characteristics
The beaches are predominantly composed of fine pebbles and gravel, with many sections reinforced by concrete sunbathing plateaus and stone piers. The water is exceptionally calm and clear due to the sheltered nature of the bay, which prevents large waves. The coastline is steeply terraced, with Mediterranean vegetation-pines, olives, and agaves-growing between hotels and villas that descend toward the water.
Location & Access Logistics
Neum is situated on the M-2 and M-17.3 highways. Since the completion of the Pelješac Bridge in neighboring Croatia and the new internal road to Stolac, access from the Bosnian interior has improved, bypassing border crossings. Public parking is available in designated lots and along the "Obala" (coast) road, though it is highly limited during summer. Most beaches are reachable via stone stairways from the upper hotel zones.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Neum corridor was granted to the Ottoman Empire by the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) in 1699 to create a buffer zone against the Venetian Republic. Ecologically, the bay is a sensitive marine ecosystem. The lack of heavy industry and the sheltering effect of the Klek peninsula contribute to higher water temperatures compared to the open Adriatic, often reaching 26°C in mid-summer.
Key Highlights & Activities
Water Sports: Pedal boats, jet skis, and banana boat rides are available at the central hotel beaches (Sunce and Zenit).
Boat Excursions: Regular tours depart for the Klek peninsula and the nearby Malostonski Bay, famous for oyster farming.
Coastal Promenade: A paved walkway runs the length of the bay, connecting the "Zenit" beach in the west to the newer developments in the east.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beaches are well-serviced with sunbed and umbrella rentals, outdoor showers, and changing cabins. 5G and 4G cellular coverage is robust throughout the coastal strip. Public restrooms are available at the major hotel complexes and central beach bars. The area is densely packed with restaurants, bakeries, and convenience stores within immediate walking distance of the water.
Best Time to Visit
The swimming season typically lasts from June to September. July and August are peak months with high density. September is recommended for travelers seeking calmer waters and lower temperatures. Early morning (07:00–09:00) provides the clearest water conditions for snorkeling.
Facts & Legends
Because the Neum bay is closed off by the Klek peninsula, the water remains remarkably still, earning it the local nickname "The Lake." It is one of the safest areas for swimming in the Adriatic due to the total absence of strong currents and large predatory fish.
