Nyíregyháza Aquarium, Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, Europe

The Nyíregyháza Oceanarium is an aquatic exhibition complex located within the Sóstó Zoo, situated 5 kilometers north of Nyíregyháza city center. It functions as the centerpiece of the Green Pyramid, a three-story tropical hall designed to simulate diverse global ecosystems.

Visual Characteristics

The facility is housed within a 4,000-square-meter glass-and-steel pyramid structure. The lower level contains a 500,000-liter seawater tank featuring a 7-meter-long transparent acrylic tunnel. Interior aesthetics include artificial coral reefs, limestone-style rock formations, and subdued blue lighting, while the upper levels utilize glass walls and dense tropical foliage to create a humid rainforest environment with a 15-meter waterfall.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is located at Sóstói út, 4431 Nyíregyháza-Sóstógyógyfürdő. By car, it is accessible via the M3 motorway and Route 4, with free parking available at the zoo's main entrance. Public transit options include the Number 8 bus line, which runs frequently from the Nyíregyháza railway station directly to the Sóstó Zoo stop.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Oceanarium was opened in 2010 as part of the Green Pyramid project, a major expansion of the Sóstó Zoo. The aquarium level is classified as a marine ecosystem exhibit, specifically focusing on the biodiversity of the Indian Ocean, including sharks, rays, and various coral-dwelling teleost fish.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk through the glass corridor to observe sand tiger sharks and honeycomb stingrays swimming overhead. Scheduled shark feedings are held twice weekly, typically on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00. The associated rainforest level allows for observation of Komodo dragons and various primate species from elevated wooden walkways.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The building is equipped with accessible elevators for all three levels, public restrooms, and a nursery room. 5G cellular signal is available throughout the park, though connectivity may be limited inside the concrete-shielded basement of the aquarium. Food services, including a restaurant and snack kiosks, are located immediately outside the Green Pyramid entrance.

Best Time to Visit

Weekday mornings during the off-peak months of April, May, and September offer the lowest crowd density. For photography, the late afternoon provides the best natural light filtering through the glass pyramid roof into the upper levels, though the aquarium section relies on consistent artificial illumination.

Facts & Legends

The Green Pyramid won a special award at the FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence for its engineering and integration into the natural 30-hectare oak forest. A local highlight is the "Black Mary" icon reproduction housed in the nearby museum village, but within the aquarium, the sand tiger shark named "Cápa" is a long-standing resident often cited by staff for its distinctive slow-patrol behavior.
