Old Bazaar, Korce, Albania, Europe
The Old Bazaar of Korçë, known locally as Pazari i Vjetër, is a historical commercial district located in the northwestern part of the city. It serves as a preserved architectural complex representing 19th and early 20th-century Balkan urban trade centers.
Visual Characteristics
The district consists of low-rise two-story buildings constructed primarily of gray stone and timber, featuring red clay tile roofs. Cobblestone streets (kalldrëm) radiate from a central square. Building facades are characterized by pastel-colored plaster, wrought-iron balconies, and heavy wooden shutters on ground-floor shopfronts.
Location & Access Logistics
The bazaar is situated 0.5km west of the city center, bordered by Shën Gjergji Boulevard and Iliaz Bej Mirahori street. It is a pedestrian-only zone; vehicles must use the designated parking lots on the perimeter near the Mirahori Mosque. It is accessible on foot from any central Korçë hotel within 10 minutes.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The bazaar's origins date to the late 15th century, established alongside the Mirahori Mosque by Iliaz Bej Mirahori. The current architectural layout largely dates to the reconstruction following the 1879 fire. It functioned as a major caravan hub for trade routes between Istanbul, Ioannina, and the Adriatic coast.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking tours of the cobblestone alleys are the primary activity. The area contains active artisan workshops, traditional coffee houses (han), and restaurants. The "Han i Elbasanit" and "Han i Pazarit" provide examples of restored 18th-century inns. Evening social gathering in the central plaza is a standard local practice.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are available at the entrance near the mosque. The area is equipped with public benches and street lighting. High-speed 5G cellular signal is available throughout the district. Numerous food vendors, bakeries, and ATMs are located within the bazaar’s perimeter.
Best Time to Visit
The bazaar is most active during the morning hours (09:00–12:00) for traditional commerce and late afternoon (18:00–22:00) for social activity. Photography is optimal during the "golden hour" before sunset when light hits the stone facades. It is a year-round destination, though outdoor seating is most prevalent from May to October.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition holds that the bazaar once contained over 1,000 shops and specialized sectors for different guilds, such as blacksmiths and tailors. A notable feature is the Han i Pazarit, which historically allowed merchants to keep their pack animals on the ground floor while they slept in rooms directly above.
