Historical & Ecological Origin
The original church on this site, St. Nicholas Church, was completed in 1777. Following its destruction by fire in 1822, the current cathedral was rebuilt and completed in 1832 under the design of architect Carl Ludvig Engel. It was originally constructed as a Lutheran parish church and was consecrated as a cathedral in 1900.
