Paros Park, Paros, Greece, Europe
Paros Park (Environmental and Cultural Park of Paros) is an 80-hectare protected peninsula located at the northern tip of the Bay of Naoussa on the island of Paros. It is a multi-functional ecological zone that integrates natural conservation with cultural and recreational facilities.
Visual Characteristics
The landscape is characterized by rugged granite rock formations, similar to Kolymbithres, and xerophytic Mediterranean vegetation including wild herbs and low-lying shrubs. The park features a coastline of dramatic cliffs and several sheltered sandy inlets, most notably Monastiri Beach. The interior is traversed by 7 kilometers of marked stone-and-dirt trails.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated approximately 7 kilometers north of Naoussa. Access is via a paved road that terminates at the Monastiri parking area. During summer, water taxis operate regularly from Naoussa Harbor, providing a 15-minute transit directly to the park's pier. Entry to the park grounds and the trail network is free of charge.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Established in 2009 as a municipal project, the park aims to protect the Aghios Ioannis Detis peninsula from unregulated development. Geologically, it is composed of ancient granite and schist formations. Historically, the area served as a headquarters for the Russian Imperial Navy during the Orlov Revolt (1770–1775); the remains of Russian fortifications are still visible along the hiking routes.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with three main routes leading to the Korakas Lighthouse at the northwestern tip. Monastiri Beach offers shallow, calm waters suitable for families. The park includes an outdoor stone amphitheater (Archilochos Theater) that hosts concerts and plays during the summer, and a small open-air cinema (Cine Enastron).
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park features a dedicated info center, a small thematic museum located in the Monastery of Aghios Ioannis Detis, and a beach bar/restaurant at Monastiri. Public restrooms are located near the theater and the beach. 4G and 5G mobile signals are consistent across most of the peninsula. The hiking trails are well-marked with stone pillars but are not suitable for wheelchairs.
Best Time to Visit
Hiking is best undertaken during the early morning hours (07:00–09:00) to avoid the intense midday heat and sun exposure on the treeless terrain. For photography, the sunset from the Korakas Lighthouse provides an unobstructed view of the Aegean and the island of Syros. The summer cultural festival runs from June through September.
Facts & Legends
The Korakas Lighthouse, built in 1887, stands 10 meters tall on a 60-meter cliff; its name "Korakas" (Raven) refers to the dark, sharp rocks of the headland. A specific tip for hikers: the trails are entirely exposed to the wind and sun; high-SPF protection and at least 1.5 liters of water are mandatory for the full circuit.
