Education City is situated approximately 15 kilometers west of central Doha. Access is primarily via Al Luqta Street and Al Shimal Road. Ample parking is available in designated multi-story car parks throughout the campus. Public transport options include the Doha Metro Red Line, with a station at Education City, and several Mowasalat bus routes that serve the area.

Education City was conceived and developed by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, with construction beginning in the late 1990s. The project's original purpose was to establish a hub for world-class education and research in the region, attracting leading international universities to offer programs in Qatar. The site itself was previously undeveloped desert land.
