Historical & Ecological Origin

Bear Butte is a geological formation that formed approximately 60 million years ago when magma pushed up from beneath the Earth's crust, creating a dome-like structure. It is considered a sacred site by many Native American tribes, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho, who have used it for spiritual ceremonies for centuries. The park was established in 1961 to protect its natural and cultural significance.
