Rollins Park is a municipal park located in Concord, New Hampshire, USA. It encompasses 70 acres of developed and undeveloped land.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a central pond, approximately 10 acres in size, with a maximum depth of 15 feet. Surrounding the pond are open grassy areas, mature deciduous trees (primarily oak and maple), and a network of paved pathways. A public swimming pool complex is situated on the western side of the park, constructed from concrete and tile. Sports fields include baseball diamonds with clay infields and grass outfields, and soccer fields with mowed turf.
Location & Access Logistics
Rollins Park is situated 2 miles south of Concord's downtown core. Access is via South Street, which provides direct entry to the park's main parking lots. Approximately 150 parking spaces are available, with overflow parking on adjacent streets during peak usage. Concord Area Transit (CAT) bus route 3 stops at the intersection of South Street and Rollins Park Road, providing public transportation access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The park was established in 1927 through a donation of land by the Rollins family, prominent local industrialists. The pond is a man-made feature, created by damming a small tributary of the Merrimack River. The surrounding land was historically agricultural before its conversion to parkland.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include swimming at the outdoor pool (seasonal, admission fee applies), fishing in the pond (state fishing license required), picnicking at designated tables, and walking or jogging on the paved trails. Baseball and soccer fields are available for public use when not reserved.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the pool complex and a separate park building. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and a few picnic shelters. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally consistent throughout the park. No on-site food vendors operate within the park; however, convenience stores are located within 0.5 miles on South Street.
Best Time to Visit
For photography of the pond and surrounding foliage, early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM) offers optimal natural light. The swimming pool operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Spring (April-May) and Fall (September-October) provide pleasant temperatures for walking and general park use.
Facts & Legends
A local anecdote suggests the pond was once used for ice harvesting by the Rollins family during severe winters, though this is unverified. The park's original design included a bandstand, which has since been removed.
