San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bilbao, Spain, Europe
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is an islet located on the Bay of Biscay coast, 35 kilometers north of Bilbao, within the municipality of Bermeo. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made stone bridge and a zigzagging staircase. The site features a small hermitage dedicated to John the Baptist at its highest point.
Visual Characteristics
The islet is a conical rock formation protruding from the Atlantic. The primary visual element is the winding path consisting of 241 stone steps that ascend the narrow ridge. The hermitage at the top is a modest, rectangular stone structure with a belfry. The surrounding coastline is characterized by dramatic cliffs, natural arches, and sea caves carved by the Cantabrian Sea.
Location & Access Logistics
Access: Entry is free but requires a mandatory online reservation during peak seasons (summer, holidays, and weekends) due to capacity limits.
Transport: From Bilbao, take the Bizkaibus line A3518 to Bakio, then the "Gaztelugatxe" shuttle bus (summer only) or a 3km walk. Alternatively, direct buses (A3527) run from Bilbao to Bermeo.
Parking: There are three designated parking lots (Lurbe, Urizarre, and Ermu) along the BI-3101 road.
Physical Demand: The round trip involves a steep 1.2km descent from the parking area followed by the 241-step ascent. It is not wheelchair accessible.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The hermitage dates back to the 10th century, though the current building is a reconstruction following several fires and attacks, including those by Sir Francis Drake in 1589. The site is part of the Gaztelugatxe Protected Biotope, a sanctuary for seabirds such as the European storm petrel and the yellow-legged gull. The geological formations are primarily composed of limestone and marl.
Key Highlights & Activities
Ringing the Bell: Tradition dictates that visitors who reach the summit should ring the hermitage bell three times and make a wish to ward off evil spirits.
The Footprint: At the beginning of the stairs, there is a footprint supposedly left by Saint John the Baptist; placing your foot in it is said to bring good luck or cure foot ailments.
Photography: The "Mirador de San Juan" near the Urizarre parking lot provides the classic wide-angle view of the entire bridge and islet.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities on the islet itself. Public restrooms and a drinking fountain are located near the "Eneperi" restaurant at the top of the trailhead. 5G cellular coverage is available but can drop in the lower sections of the trail. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential as the path is uneven and can be slippery when wet.
Best Time to Visit
To avoid extreme crowds and midday heat, arrive before 10:00. Sunset is the optimal time for photography, as the sun sets directly over the ocean. In winter, the site may be closed during "Red Alert" maritime storms due to dangerous waves crashing over the bridge.
Facts & Legends
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe gained global fame as the filming location for Dragonstone in the HBO series Game of Thrones. A historical fact: the islet was a strategic defensive point for the Lords of Biscay against the King of Castile in the 14th century.
