Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge
The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1953, spans approximately 9,870 acres in Saginaw County, Michigan. Situated about 5 miles south of the city of Saginaw, the refuge encompasses a diverse array of habitats, including marshes, bottomland hardwood forests, and grasslands. It serves as a critical sanctuary for migratory birds, particularly those utilizing the Mississippi Flyway, and is designated as an Important Bird Area due to its global significance to migratory waterfowl.
Wildlife and Habitats
The refuge supports over 280 species of migratory birds, including raptors, shorebirds, wading birds, and more than 100 species of songbirds. Notable species include Canada geese, ducks, great blue herons, great egrets, and several pairs of nesting eagles. In addition to avian life, the refuge is home to muskrats, white-tailed deer, and eastern fox snakes. The diverse habitats within the refuge, such as the restored Maankiki Marsh, provide essential resources for these species.
