Slanický Island, Namestovo, Slovakia, Europe
Slanický Island (Slanický ostrov), also known as the "Island of Art," is a small island in the Orava Reservoir (Oravská priehrada) near Námestvo, Slovakia. It is the only remains of five villages-Slanica, Osada, Hámre, Ľavkov, and Ústie-that were submerged in 1953 during the reservoir's construction.
Visual Characteristics
The island is a verdant hill rising from the artificial lake, dominated by a Baroque-Classicist church. The exterior features a lapidarium of Orava stonemasonry with 18th- and 19th-century sculptures. The landscape is characterized by manicured lawns and mature trees surrounding the preserved religious structures.
Location & Access Logistics
The island is located in the middle of the Orava Reservoir. It is strictly accessible by boat.
Port: Cruises depart from Port No. 2 (Slanická Osada), approximately 1.5 km south of Námestovo.
Transport: The passenger ship OG Slanica operates seasonally from May 15 to September 15.
Parking: Public parking is available at Slanická Osada near the departure docks.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The island was originally the highest point of the village of Slanica. When the valley was flooded for the dam project, this hilltop, containing the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (built 1766–1769), remained above water. In the 1970s, the Orava Gallery converted the site into a permanent outdoor exhibition space.
Key Highlights & Activities
Church Interior: Houses the "Traditional Folk Sculpture and Painting" exhibition.

The island is a museum site with limited commercial infrastructure.
Connectivity: Cellular signal (4G/5G) is generally stable due to proximity to the shore.
Facilities: Basic restroom facilities are available for visitors during museum hours.
Accessibility: The island involves uneven terrain and steps; it is not fully wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
The island is only open to the public during the summer season (May 15 – September 15).
Schedule: Boats typically depart daily at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 16:30.
Photography: Late afternoon trips (15:00 or 16:30) provide optimal lighting for the church facade and the Orava Beskids mountain range in the background.
Facts & Legends
The island is often called the "Slovak Altantis." It is the birthplace of Anton Bernolák, the first codifier of the Slovak language; his home was among those submerged, and a monument on the island honors his legacy.
