Sunset Lake, Wildwood, USA New Jersey, North America

Sunset Lake is a freshwater body located within the municipal limits of Wildwood, New Jersey, USA.

It is a man-made reservoir situated approximately 1.5 kilometers west of the Atlantic Ocean coastline.

Visual Characteristics

The lake has a surface area of approximately 15 hectares. Its perimeter is defined by a concrete retaining wall on the eastern and southern sides, with natural vegetation and sandy banks on the northern and western sections. Water color varies from a murky brown to a greenish hue depending on recent rainfall and algal bloom activity. The average depth is estimated at 2.5 meters.

Location & Access Logistics

Sunset Lake is accessible via County Road 621 (Atlantic Avenue). It is located 2 kilometers inland from the Wildwood Boardwalk. Parking is available in a designated gravel lot on the western side of the lake, with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles. Public transport options include the Wildwood Jitney Route 3, which stops at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Lake Drive, a 0.3km walk from the lake's southern edge.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Sunset Lake was constructed in 1958 as part of a municipal flood control and water retention project. The primary purpose was to manage stormwater runoff from the developed areas of Wildwood and prevent localized flooding. The lake bed consists of compacted sand and clay, with the surrounding area historically being marshland.

Key Highlights & Activities

Fishing is permitted from the shoreline and the western parking area. Kayaking and paddleboarding are allowed, with a designated launch point on the northern bank. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the presence of various waterfowl species. No motorized watercraft are permitted.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the western parking lot, open from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily. Limited shade is provided by mature oak trees along the northern perimeter. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable around the lake. No food vendors are located directly at the lake; the nearest commercial establishments are approximately 1 kilometer east on Atlantic Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the hour before sunset offers optimal lighting conditions. The months of April through October provide the most favorable weather for outdoor activities. Water levels are typically highest after significant rainfall events.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lake was named Sunset Lake not for its visual appeal at dusk, but because early developers believed it would be a prime location for future waterfront housing developments that never materialized.
