The fortress is situated approximately 3.5 kilometers east of Tetovo city center, atop Baltepe Hill. Access is primarily by vehicle via local paved roads that ascend the hill, followed by a short walk on unpaved paths to the ruins. Limited informal parking is available near the base of the final ascent. Public transport does not directly serve the fortress; local taxis can reach the base of the hill, or visitors can walk from the city center.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Tetovo Fortress was constructed between 1818 and 1821 by Abdurrahman Pasha, an Ottoman Albanian ruler of the region. Its original purpose was to serve as a defensive stronghold, a military barracks, and a fortified residence for the Pasha and his administration.

The most favorable months for visiting are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) due to mild temperatures and less precipitation. There are no tide requirements.
Facts & Legends
Abdurrahman Pasha, the builder of the fortress, was also responsible for the extensive renovation and artistic decoration of the Šarena Džamija (Painted Mosque) in Tetovo. The fortress was part of his broader vision to establish Tetovo as a significant administrative and cultural center within the Ottoman Empire. A practical tip for visitors is to wear sturdy footwear, as the terrain within the ruins is uneven and rocky.
