Tsari Mali Grad, Samokov, Bulgaria, Europe

Tsari Mali Grad is a reconstructed Roman fortress and cultural-historical complex located on the Sveti Spas hill above the village of Belchin. It is situated in the Samokov valley, approximately 15 kilometers west of the town of Samokov.

Visual Characteristics

The landmark consists of a fortified enclosure with reconstructed limestone walls, three rectangular corner towers, and a gate tower. The interior houses a white-plastered church and various wooden structures designed in the late antiquity style. The site sits on a plateau at 1,200 meters elevation, surrounded by dense coniferous and deciduous forests, providing a direct view of the Rila and Vitosha mountain ranges.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is via the village of Belchin, reached by the main road from Samokov or the Sofia-Dupnitsa highway. Visitors reach the fortress from the village level using a dual-track funicular (inclined elevator) or by hiking one of two eco-trails. A large, paved parking lot is located at the base station of the funicular in Belchin.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site originated as a 4th-century Roman fortification intended to guard the trade routes between the Danube and the Aegean Sea. Archaeological excavations revealed layers of Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine occupation. The current structure is a 2013 reconstruction built upon the original foundations of the late Roman castellum using authentic masonry techniques integrated with modern conservation materials.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the museum exhibitions inside the towers, which display Roman coins, weapons, and pottery discovered on-site. The 4th-century Church of the Ascension has been fully restored and holds religious services. An extensive wooden adventure park and rope bridge are located immediately outside the fortress walls for children and recreational activities.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The complex includes a visitor center with a ticket office, a souvenir shop, and clean public restrooms. 5G and 4G cellular signals are consistently strong across the hill. While there are no large restaurants inside the fortress walls, several cafes and traditional taverns are located at the base of the hill in Belchin and near the thermal pools.

Best Time to Visit

The site is most accessible from May to October. For photography, the late afternoon provides the best light to capture the stone textures and the panoramic mountain backdrop. The complex is typically closed on Mondays for maintenance. High-altitude weather can be unpredictable; clear autumn days offer the best visibility for viewing the distant Balkan Mountains.

Facts & Legends

The name "Tsari Mali Grad" translates to "Little Tsar's City," a name given by local residents who believed the ruins were so significant they rivaled the scale of the capital, Veliko Tarnovo. During the reconstruction, evidence of a gold-mining settlement was found nearby, confirming the fortress's role in protecting the valuable iron and gold resources of the Samokov region.
