Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo, Tupelo, USA Mississippi, North America

Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo, located at 2272 North Coley Road in Tupelo, Mississippi, is the state’s largest zoo, encompassing 210 acres of rolling pastures, woodlands, and wildlife exhibits. Originally a cattle ranch, the park began introducing American bison in 1997, growing one of the largest herds east of the Mississippi River. It officially opened to the public in November 2001 and has since become a premier destination for family outings, school trips, and wildlife enthusiasts.

Wildlife and Exhibits

The zoo is home to over 260 animals representing 125 species, blending native and exotic wildlife. Its most iconic residents are the American bison, which roam freely across expansive pastures. Visitors can take a guided Bison Safari Tour to observe these majestic creatures up close, often seeing younger calves alongside mature bulls and cows.

Other notable animals include:

Exotic Mammals: Giraffes, zebras, camels, llamas, alpacas, yaks, and Watusi cattle. Visitors can often feed or interact with some of these animals in designated areas.

Big Cats: African lions and Bengal tigers are housed in safe, open-style enclosures designed to mimic natural habitats. These enclosures allow visitors to see the animals in active, engaging settings.

Primates: Capuchin monkeys, including the famous Oliver, known for his clever escapes in 2007, inhabit enriched enclosures that encourage natural behaviors.

Reptiles and Birds: Alligators, pythons, tortoises, and various exotic birds provide educational viewing opportunities. The zoo’s aviary hosts a mix of colorful species, from parrots to exotic waterfowl.

The zoo also features a petting area, where children and families can feed goats, sheep, and deer, creating hands-on learning experiences.

Recreational Attractions

Beyond traditional zoo exhibits, Tupelo Buffalo Park offers a variety of interactive and adventure activities:

Bison Safari Tour: A guided ride through the buffalo pastures, giving visitors a sense of scale and perspective on these massive animals.

Zip Line: An elevated course providing a thrilling aerial view of parts of the park.

Pony Rides: Designed for younger visitors, offering safe, supervised horseback experiences.

Pillow Jumper: A large inflatable area for children to jump and play.

Playground and Teepees: Encouraging imaginative outdoor play, these areas are integrated into the natural landscape.

Seasonal Pumpkin Patch: Every October, the park hosts a family-friendly pumpkin patch, featuring hayrides, corn mazes, and pumpkin picking, combining agriculture and recreation.

Walking paths and open spaces allow visitors to explore at their own pace, combining leisurely strolls with opportunities for wildlife observation. Picnic areas and shaded benches provide spots for rest and family gatherings.

Educational and Community Engagement

Tupelo Buffalo Park emphasizes education through interactive experiences and live demonstrations.
