Facts & Legends
The most enduring local legend associated with Turaida is that of the Rose of Turaida. In 1601, during the Polish-Swedish War, a young girl named Maija was found orphaned after a battle and raised at Turaida Castle. Known for her beauty, she fell in love with a gardener from Sigulda. Tragically, she was lured to Gutmanis Cave by a Polish nobleman who intended to assault her. To protect her honor, Maija offered him a magical silk scarf, claiming it would protect him from any weapon. She then instructed him to test its power by striking her with an axe, believing this act would save her from dishonor. She died, and the nobleman was later executed for her murder, though the gardener was initially suspected. Her grave is located in the Turaida Church cemetery.
