Historical & Ecological Origin
Volcano Bay opened on May 25, 2017. It was designed by Universal Creative, the same division responsible for other Universal theme parks. The park's theme is inspired by Polynesian culture and mythology, with Krakatau representing a fictional volcano central to the island's lore. The landscaping is designed to mimic a tropical island environment.
Key Highlights & Activities
Key attractions include Krakatau Aqua Coaster, a water coaster that travels through the volcano; Ko’okiri Body Plunge, a 125-foot-tall water slide with a 70-degree drop; and the TapuTapu wearable technology system, which allows guests to hold their place in virtual queues. Other activities include wave pool swimming at Waturi Beach, lazy river rides on Kopiko Wai Winding River, and thrill rides like the Punga Racers and the Ohyah & Ohno Drop Slides.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located throughout the park. Shaded areas are available in various sections, including cabanas and under thatched roofs. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the park. Food and beverage options are available at multiple locations within Volcano Bay, including Kohola Reef Restaurant & Social Club and Whakawaiwai Eats.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography, particularly of Krakatau, is during the morning or late afternoon when the sun's angle provides optimal lighting. The best months for weather are typically April through May and September through October, avoiding the peak summer heat and humidity. High tide is not a factor for park operations. Early arrival is recommended to experience popular attractions with minimal wait times.
Facts & Legends
The fictional legend behind Volcano Bay tells of the Waturi people, who traveled the Pacific Ocean in search of a new home. They discovered the island of Volcano Bay, a paradise protected by the spirit of the volcano, Krakatau. The TapuTapu wearable is said to be a gift from the Waturi elders, allowing visitors to experience the island's magic.
