Valley of Three Ponds, Katowice, Poland, Europe
The Valley of Three Ponds (Dolina Trzech Stawów) is a 125-hectare recreational and sports complex located south of Katowice city center. It serves as the city's primary green belt, integrated into the larger 420-hectare Katowice Forest Park (Katowicki Park Leśny).
Visual Characteristics
The valley is a vast expanse of mixed woodland, meadows, and water bodies. Despite the name, the area technically contains 11 ponds of varying sizes. The landscape is dominated by dense foliage, manicured flowerbeds, and a network of wide asphalt paths that cut through the forest. Modern architectural elements include the "Sztauwajery" (a seasonal container bar district), a water playground with colorful sprayers, and a beach area with light sand adjacent to the A4 highway.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated approximately 2 kilometers south of the city center, wrapping in a "L-shape" around the Muchowiec airfield. It is bordered by Pułaskiego, Trzech Stawów, and Francuska streets. Access is provided by municipal bus lines 110, 674, and 910 from the main railway station. For cyclists, the "City by Bike" rental system operates from April to December. Ample free parking is available at the "3 Stawy" shopping mall and in smaller lots along the park's perimeter.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The complex was established in the 1960s on post-industrial grounds formerly utilized by the "Ferdinand" (later "Katowice") coal mine. The ponds are artificial, formed by the flooding of former sand excavation pits and mining subsidence areas. It was designed to transition Katowice from a strictly industrial hub to a "Garden City" model, providing a microclimate of therapeutic herbs and mature beech trees to counteract Silesian industrial sprawl.
Key Highlights & Activities
Water Sports: Kayak and boat rentals are available at the "Kayak Pond" (Staw Kajakowy). Fishing is permitted in designated areas.
Athletics: A 4-kilometer specialized rollerblading track and extensive cycling lanes run parallel to the Muchowiec Airport.
Events: The valley is the permanent home of the OFF Festival (alternative music) and various seasonal food truck rallies.
Recreation: Includes a disc golf course, tennis courts, volleyball nets, and a dedicated dog park.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The valley features high-speed 5G coverage throughout its open areas. Public restrooms and changing rooms are located near the water playground and the main beach. Dining infrastructure is concentrated in two hubs: the "Sztauwajery" area with pop-up bars and food trucks, and permanent restaurants like "Stara Ponderosa" and "La Cantina" located deeper in the park.
Best Time to Visit
The area is most active during summer weekends (June–August) when the bathing areas and beach bars are fully operational. For nature photography, early autumn (October) provides the best contrast between the water and the changing deciduous trees. The park is open 24 hours daily, though it is best visited before dusk as lighting is concentrated only on the main asphalt arteries.
Facts & Legends
The local Silesian name for the area is "Sztauwajery," derived from the German word Stauweiher (reservoir). A modern urban landmark in the park is a sculpture of a bison, which serves as a popular meeting point. While the name refers to "Three Ponds," the expansion into Katowice Forest Park means visitors will actually encounter nearly a dozen distinct water reservoirs within the same walking circuit.
