Visual Characteristics

The dam is an earth-fill and rock-fill structure measuring approximately 242 feet (74 meters) in height and 9,330 feet (2,844 meters) in length. Its upstream face is covered with riprap, while the downstream slope is vegetated. The reservoir it creates, Lake Oahe, is a significant body of water with a shoreline extending hundreds of miles.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of Oahe Dam began in 1948 and was completed in 1962. It was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944. The dam's primary purposes include flood control, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and navigation. Ecologically, it transformed the Missouri River valley, creating a large reservoir that altered local habitats.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can access the dam's crest via vehicle or on foot for panoramic views of Lake Oahe and the surrounding landscape. The Oahe Dam Visitor Center provides exhibits on the dam's construction and operation. Fishing and boating are popular activities on Lake Oahe. Hiking trails are available in the vicinity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the visitor center. Shaded picnic areas are located near the dam. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available in the immediate vicinity of the dam and visitor center. Food vendors are not present at the dam site, but are available in nearby Pierre.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning and late afternoon offer favorable conditions. The months of May through September provide the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities. Lake Oahe is accessible year-round, though winter conditions can impact access and activity options.

Facts & Legends

Lake Oahe is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in the United States by surface area. A unique aspect of the dam's operation is its role in regulating water levels for downstream navigation, a complex logistical feat.
