Parking availability varies; some popular sites have designated lots, while others offer roadside parking. Public transportation within Puna is limited, with limited bus routes serving the main population centers.

The Puna District is geologically young, formed by ongoing volcanic activity from the Kīlauea volcano. The land is composed of basaltic lava flows, with the most recent significant flows occurring in 2018, which reshaped parts of the coastline and destroyed communities. High tide is not a significant factor for most Puna attractions, except for coastal access points.

A significant geological event in Puna was the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption, which destroyed the town of Kapoho and created new land extending into the ocean. Local legends often speak of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, and her influence on the land's formation and destruction.
