New Ulm, USA Minnesota, North America

New Ulm is an independent city and the seat of Brown County, situated at the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers. Known as the "Most German Town in America," it is defined by its deep-rooted ethnic heritage, its survival of the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War, and its identity as a premier center for brewing and traditional Germanic culture.

Historical Timeline

Inhabited by the Dakota people (Wakzupata). Primary governance began with its 1854 founding by the German Land Company of Chicago, followed by the 1856 arrival of the Cincinnati Turners, a socialist gymnastics and freethinking society. A critical historical event was the 1862 Battle of New Ulm, where the town was nearly destroyed during the U.S.-Dakota War; it remains one of the few American cities to have been successfully besieged by a foreign or indigenous power. The 20th century saw the city preserve its cultural exclusivity through the World Wars, eventually transitioning into a heritage-tourism economy. In 2000, the U.S. Congress designated the city’s Hermann Monument as an official symbol of the contributions of German-Americans.

Demographics & Population

The population is approximately 14,000. The demographics are White (94.5%), with small Hispanic (4%), Asian, and Black populations. Approximately 66% of residents claim German ancestry. The economy is driven by food processing, manufacturing (3M, AMPI), and healthcare.

Urban Layout & Key Districts

New Ulm is designed on a traditional grid, influenced by Turner "Utopian" planning ideals, with wide avenues and public squares.

Downtown / Minnesota Street: The commercial and cultural heart, featuring Bavarian-style architecture, the Glockenspiel, and independent specialty shops.

Hermann Heights: A prominent bluff-top district overlooking the city, containing the Hermann Monument and historic residential estates.

Goosetown: Historically the working-class, German-Bohemian neighborhood on the lower flats near the river.

The Brewery District: The southern edge of the city dominated by the massive August Schell Brewing complex and its adjacent gardens.

Top City Landmarks

Hermann Heights Monument ("Hermann the German"): A 102-foot copper statue of the ancient chieftain who defeated the Romans. It is the third-largest copper statue in the U.S.

August Schell Brewing Company: Established in 1860, it is the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the U.S. and features a sprawling estate with roaming peacocks and a deer park.

The Glockenspiel: A 45-foot-tall freestanding clock tower in Schonlau Park that features 37 bells and 12 animated figures depicting city history.

Turner Hall: Founded in 1856, it houses the oldest Rathskeller (bar/restaurant) in Minnesota and maintains the original murals and gymnastics facilities.

Brown County Historical Society: Housed in a stunning 1910 Flemish Renaissance-style former post office; contains extensive exhibits on the 1862 war.

Flandrau State Park: A 980-acre park featuring a sand-bottom swimming pool and hiking trails along the Cottonwood River.

Facts & Legends

New Ulm was the site of a 1917 mass protest against the U.S. entry into WWI, leading to the removal of the city's mayor and city attorney by the Governor. Historically, the city’s brewing industry survived Prohibition by producing "near-beer" and candy. A local legend involves the "Glockenspiel Mystery," where certain figures in the clock tower are rumored to change positions unexpectedly. Another legend concerns the "Secret Turner Tunnels," alleged passages used to move alcohol during Prohibition, though most are confirmed as simple brewery lagering caves.
