The Anse Major Trail is a hiking path located on the northwest coast of Mahé Island, Seychelles. It leads to a secluded beach accessible primarily by foot or boat.

Visual Characteristics

The trail traverses granite boulders and dense tropical vegetation, including takamaka trees and pandanus. The path itself is largely unpaved, consisting of compacted earth and exposed rock. The destination, Anse Major, features a crescent-shaped beach with fine, light-colored sand and clear, turquoise water. Large granite formations are present on either side of the beach.

Location & Access Logistics

The trailhead is situated near the village of Bel Ombre on Mahé. Access is via the road leading to the Bel Ombre district. Parking is available at the end of the public road in Bel Ombre, approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Victoria. From the parking area, the trail begins. Public transport to Bel Ombre is available via local bus routes, typically requiring a transfer in Victoria. The trail is approximately 2.5 kilometers one-way from the trailhead to Anse Major.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The trail follows ancient paths historically used by local inhabitants for fishing and accessing the remote beach. Ecologically, the area is part of the Seychelles' tropical island ecosystem, characterized by endemic flora and fauna adapted to the granitic islands.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking the Anse Major Trail is the primary activity. Visitors can swim and snorkel at Anse Major beach, particularly during calmer sea conditions. The trail offers opportunities for birdwatching. Access by boat is also an option, with small boat operators available from nearby beaches.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no formal amenities directly on the Anse Major Trail or at Anse Major beach. Visitors should carry sufficient water and food. Restroom facilities are not available. Cell phone signal can be intermittent along the trail and at the beach.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for hiking is during the dry season, from May to September, to avoid heavy rainfall. Early morning or late afternoon provides more comfortable temperatures and better lighting for photography. High tide is generally preferred for swimming and snorkeling at Anse Major.

Facts & Legends

Anse Major is rumored to have been a favored spot for pirates to anchor their ships due to its sheltered nature and proximity to fresh water sources, though concrete historical evidence is limited.
