Bhawal National Park, Gazipur, Bangladesh, Asia
Bhawal National Park is a protected area located in the Gazipur District of Bangladesh. It serves as a significant ecological and recreational site within the country.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a mixed deciduous forest ecosystem. Dominant tree species include Sal (Shorea robusta), Teak (Tectona grandis), and various Acacia species. The terrain is generally flat with some undulating areas. A central lake, locally known as the "Bhawal Lake," is a prominent water feature. The undergrowth consists of grasses and smaller shrubs.
Location & Access Logistics
Bhawal National Park is situated approximately 40 kilometers north of Dhaka city center. Access is primarily via the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway (N3). Visitors can turn off at the Gazipur Chowrasta intersection and follow local signage for approximately 5 kilometers. Private vehicle parking is available at designated areas near the park entrance. Public transport options include local buses traveling towards Gazipur from Dhaka's Mohakhali Bus Terminal; passengers can alight at Gazipur Chowrasta and take a rickshaw or auto-rickshaw to the park entrance.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The area was designated as a National Park in 1974. Historically, it was part of the Sal forest tracts that once covered large portions of the region. The park's ecological origin is rooted in the natural regeneration of these forest types, with some areas undergoing afforestation efforts. It is classified as a tropical moist deciduous forest.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include walking on designated trails through the forest. Observation of local birdlife is possible. Boat rentals are available on Bhawal Lake for exploration. Photography of flora and fauna is permitted. Picnicking is allowed in designated zones.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located near the main entrance and at the picnic spots. Shade is provided by the forest canopy. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the park. Limited food vendors operate near the park entrance, offering snacks and bottled beverages. No formal restaurants are present within the park boundaries.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for visiting is during the dry season, from October to March. The cooler months of November to February offer the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor activities. Early morning hours (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM) provide optimal lighting for birdwatching and photography due to softer light conditions.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the central lake was formed by the tears of a heartbroken princess. Scientifically, the lake is a natural depression that collects rainwater and runoff. The park is home to a variety of bird species, including the Indian Pitta and the Oriental Pied Hornbill.
