Public transport options include local buses traveling towards Sonargaon from Dhaka's Sayedabad bus terminal; disembark at the Sonargaon bus stand and take a rickshaw or auto-rickshaw to the museum (approximately 2 kilometers).

The site was once the capital of the medieval Sultanate of Bengal, founded by Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah in the 14th century. The current museum complex was established to house and exhibit archaeological finds and cultural heritage from this period and later. The area is situated on the banks of the Meghna River, influencing its historical significance as a trading port.
