Ca’ Pesaro is a Baroque palace housing the International Gallery of Modern Art, located on the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy.
Visual Characteristics
The palace features a rusticated stone facade with three levels of loggias. The ground floor is constructed of Istrian stone, while the upper floors are rendered in stucco. The building measures approximately 30 meters in height and exhibits a Baroque architectural style characterized by its ornate detailing and imposing scale.
Location & Access Logistics
Ca’ Pesaro is situated on the Grand Canal at the intersection with the Cannaregio Canal. It is accessible via the Vaporetto (water bus) lines 1 and 2, with the Ca' Pesaro stop directly serving the palace. From Piazzale Roma, the nearest land transport hub, it is approximately a 15-minute Vaporetto ride (Line 1). Limited public parking is available at Piazzale Roma, but private water taxis are also an option.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Ca’ Pesaro began in 1659 and was completed in 1710, designed by Baldassare Longhena and finished by Antonio Gaspari. It was commissioned by the Pesaro family, a wealthy merchant family, with the intention of creating a grand residence and symbol of their status. The palace was later acquired by the Venetian government and transformed into a museum.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can view collections of 19th and 20th-century Italian and European art, including works by Klimt, Chagall, and Matisse. The museum also features a significant collection of Japanese prints. Access to the rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the Grand Canal and surrounding cityscape.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on-site. Limited shaded areas are present within the museum's exhibition spaces. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the palace. Food and beverage services are not provided within the museum, but numerous cafes and restaurants are located nearby along the Grand Canal and in the Cannaregio district.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography inside the museum is during daylight hours when natural light illuminates the artworks. For visiting the rooftop terrace, late afternoon provides favorable lighting conditions. The museum is open year-round, with fewer crowds typically observed during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October).
Facts & Legends
A notable historical detail is that the palace was originally intended to be even larger, with plans for a second identical structure across the canal that were never realized. The Pesaro family's ambition was to dominate the Grand Canal visually.
