Black Dragon Pool is situated approximately 2 kilometers north of Lijiang Old Town. Access is via paved roads, with the main entrance located on the northern side. Parking is available at designated lots near the entrance, with a fee. Public bus routes 3, 6, and 11 stop at or near the pool's entrance. The journey from Lijiang city center by taxi typically takes 10-15 minutes.

The pool's origins are linked to the Ming Dynasty, with significant construction and landscaping occurring during the Qing Dynasty. It served as a source of water for Lijiang and was a site for religious ceremonies. Ecologically, the pool is fed by underground springs originating from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
